The Transformation of Food Culture on the Case of Kyrgyz Nomads—A Historical Overview

The society in Kyrgyzstan experiences a triple burden of malnutrition which occurs when undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiency coexists, straining the public health system. This research investigates historical trends nutrition transition nomadic semi-nomadic Kyrgyz foods consumed earlier before industrialisation intensification agriculture started. Qualitative design inspired by analysis sociological methods were employed. Saturation sampling was used to conduct 15 semi-structural interviews informal conversations with non-participant observation. Secondary data conducted based on nomads’ scientific studies from history anthropology, agricultural politics studies. Results suggest that nomads have undergone several periods change social political order since mid-19th century till nowadays tribe-based system predominantly sedentarism limited lifestyle. collectivisation farms, urbanisation planned type economy led shifts lifestyle diets. Furthermore, trade liberalisation open policies, entrance food corporations impacted nutritional status population. study also reveals traditional rich nutrients. Consumption forgotten neglected plants might improve current Nutrition intervention programs should definitely consider locally available as part nutrition.
